Math class isn't all paper and pencil, but the Illustrative Math program and students' learning is often enriched with opportunities for hands-on and partner work. The students Mrs. Seymour's class on this particular day were learning about perimeter of rectangles using rulers and pipe cleaners.

Kindergarten is a busy place for learning! Please enjoy the pics of Mrs. Evan's class learning: playing a memory game with students' photos to help new students learn each other's names, writing, making 3-D shapes with play dough and straws, dissecting owl pellets, and receiving their River Hawk stuffed animal. So much purposeful fun and learning happens all day in Kindergarten!

The students in Mrs. Everrett's Kindergarten class have been learning about forest animals and how they survive in the wild. Today we examined a real moose antler and branches that were left behind by a beaver.

The students in Mrs. Everett's kindergarten class have been studying animals and habitats as part of our K for ME program. Students have been observing owl pellets to learn what owls eat (STEM Center), building animal habitats for forest animals (Blocks Center) and learning how to care for sick or injured wildlife at the Wildlife Rehab Center (Drama Center). Integrating the study of animals and habitats supports and enriches the student's background knowledge as well as literacy and mathematical learning. Enjoy the wonderful pics of learning.

Lost and Found at the MCSCS has grown over the last few months. We have tables set up in the lobby for children to look at and parents can ask at the main office to also come in to look for items. The items are organized by size and by sweatshirts/jackets. After the holiday break we will be placing these items in our school clothing closet. Please encourage your child to stop and take a look.

๐ŸŽ“โœจ Our Third Graders Meet Their High School Mentors! โœจ๐ŸŽ“

This month, our third graders helped kick off the 2025โ€“2026 Adopt-A-Classroom Program! Through this special program, high school seniors from across the district โ€œadoptโ€ a third-grade classroom to build friendships and share inspiration for the future.

During their first visit, the seniors shared their dreams and career goals โ€” from becoming a neurologist to a nail technician โ€” and led fun, hands-on activities to help our students start thinking about their own hopes and goals.

Mill Stream third-grade teacher Sheryl Gray said,

โ€œThe kids loved connecting with the older students and had a lot of great questions. They were able to connect with them in a really positive way about their futures and goals. The high school students made the kids feel safe to share their dreams and reassured them that with hard work, they can accomplish anything and that the world needs people in all kinds of careers!โ€

Weโ€™re so proud of our third graders for dreaming big โ€” and so thankful to our high school seniors for being such inspiring mentors!

A Community Champion is a person who collaborates with a variety of partners to strengthen school, business, and non-profit relationships for the benefit of the community and our students.

Congratulations to Margaret Chase Smith Community School's first Community Champion, Aliza Jones! Aliza has strengthened relationships between MSAD 54 and the community by maintaining close collaboration with care providers and school teams, even as she transitioned to her new role as Early Childhood Special Education Coordinator. She consistently works across programs to ensure smooth communication, timely support, and continuity of care for students. Her commitment to problem-solving and fostering teamwork helps bridge school and community services so that students receive coordinated, high-quality support without delays.

Thank you for everything you do, Mrs. Jones!
